The road is closed in winter, but in the summer season, the place is very attractive for travellers such as motorhome tourists. In 2008, a parking area for motorhomes was established, but it has not been much used.
The aim of the project has been to increase the attractiveness of the area, so that more visitors will choose to use it. This will reduce the impact of motorhomes entering the village of Hamningberg and the recreational area of Skjåvika.
The project is about dividing the large existing parking area into a number of more intimate spaces. These spaces have been designed as "campfire sites" so that motorhome travellers can set up camp here. In connection with the parking area, the new facilities include two toilet buildings and a waste station.
The parking area itself has the same size and scope as before. The campfire sites have been established as “pockets” or crater-shaped hollows along the edges of the area, using local stone in the design. The stones form low ridges, which create intimate spaces sheltered from the wind. These spaces have been furnished with benches and fire pits.
The two toilet buildings are inspired by the Pomor style log house technique, which was used to build many of the preserved houses in Hamningberg. The logs are untreated on three sides, and slant cut at the top to mark the door to the toilet. The roofs of the buildings have been designed to capture the unique light in this landscape. The midnight sun is reflected in a number of steps and the light also enters the toilet room.
