The rest area is linked to a spectacular historic road section running through the old Kvelven tunnel along the steep mountainside in Brattlandsdalen.
Juvo rest area has a simple, discreet design that blends naturally into the existing terrain and vegetation, creating space for relaxation, experiences and a walk in the landscape. The project highlights both history and nature through an integrated approach. The traditional guardrail along the old road has been preserved and forms part of a dialogue with a new one, thus uniting the past and the present.
The historic guardrail around the parking bay has been opened up between the guard stones, and joined together with the new one that winds elegantly out onto the top of the cliff. It responds to the shapes of the terrain and reflects both the movement of the river and the dynamic shape of the gorge.
Visitors are invited to follow the guarded walkways out to two separate viewpoints that extend slightly beyond the edge of the cliff. From these points, you can admire the dramatic rock formations in the gorge with the potholes at the bottom, and listen to the energetic sound of the water rushing through the valley.
Robust, site-appropriate oak seating elements have been placed in the terrain, inviting travellers to take a break in close contact with the forest floor and with a magnificent view. The project encourages visitors to immerse themselves in nature, while also gaining insight into the cultural history of the area.
Juvo is not just a stopping point – it is a place for experiences, where you can catch your breath, stretch your legs and let your gaze wander up and down the valley – a landscape room shaped by natural forces and movement.
