The rest area has been established along National Road 7 (Rv 7) at the outlet of Lake Måbøvatnet at the top of Måbødalen valley in Eidfjord.

The stop is close to Måbø Bridge, a beautiful stone arch bridge from 1910. The bridge and the old road constitute a protected cultural monument and were taken out of use when the new Rv 7 route was ready in 1986.

The original rest area from the 1990s has now been upgraded with seating benches, planting and universally designed access. The goal has been to create an open and friendly place that invites travellers to take a nice break in beautiful surroundings. The place has been carefully cleaned up, removing some elements and reusing others.

The project is part of the efforts to upgrade Norwegian Scenic Route Hardangervidda in Måbødalen and at Vøringsfossen to become a unified travel experience with old travel routes and Scenic Route projects as important ingredients.
